My first ever paid public speaking event at the LEE Summit!
Between a busy tutoring season, yet another illness, and my brain being absolute mush, it’s been hard to sit down to write anything the past few weeks even though I super wanted to. Nonetheless, prepare thineselves for some long-winded rambling! >.<
From Mid-December to roughly Mid-March, I was intensely burnt out and now I’m struggling with it again thanks to a new illness. Anywho, in January – at least I think it was January (I may or may not have my timeline mixed up cuz burnout) – Meg contacted me about being a speaker at the first ever Low Energy Entrepreneurs Summit aka LEE Summit.
I was frigging pumped. And just this side of terrified. Even though I tutor for public speaking, I myself have actual diagnosable social anxiety and struggle with speaking/following large group conversations. Despite that, I genuinely enjoy my position as tutor, even if the irony of it still makes me chuckle. I’ve also had it said that my own difficulties with public speaking go a long way toward helping me be a more empathetic and effective tutor overall – a sentiment I agree with and lean into as much as possible.
And I actually love to support others in ways that come naturally to me. So, despite my struggle with large crowds, speaking and working with people one-on-one is one of my favoritest things to do! And I really want to do more of that as well as get more comfortable being a human with a service-based business who would also like to work with other humans in business (and get paid for my expertise and hard work).
Another struggle: I recently changed my specialization from Personal Branding to Narrative Photography so I had to figure out in a fairly short (for me) time frame what the heck I was going to even talk about and share with everyone. I think it’ll take a whole other blog to talk more on that but when it’s ready, you can read it here. For now – back to the LEE Summit.
The LEE Summit consisted of three days of presentations by some truly lovely humans with 3 presentations a day starting in the afternoon. I, for one, was very much in love with this structure. Most every summit or conference I’ve ever been to jam packs the days, with some workshops overlapping others.
Granted, having variety is not necessarily a bad thing but, personally speaking, it can feel both overwhelming and a bit disappointing to miss a great presentation because two great ones are booked at the exact same time. So for sensitive bean me, the structure that Meg + Kendall came up with is just chef’s kiss!
Even after settling on my topic – Embracing Storytelling to Build Community as a Low Energy, Chronically Ill, and Anti-Hustle Entrepreneur – I was really nervous. But I’m really glad I did this! It was definitely hard for me with burnout, procrastination, and speaking anxiety throwing me for a loop, but I did it and I think it went pretty well!
Top among those reasons are the amazing people who attended the calls, both those already in as well as those drawn to the community for the summit. I truly felt I was in the presence of some of the most empathetic and kind people I’ve ever had the pleasure to speak with!
